IELTS Reading tips
- spelling is very important. When you learn new words make sure you know how to spell them. Go back and check the spelling of your answers.
- look at the picture and the title to give you a general idea of the topic, and then look at the questions.
- don’t waste too much time on one question. If it’s too difficult for you, go on to the next question and come back if you have time

IELTS Speaking tips
- try to talk about what you know rather than general ideas.
- practise speaking at length. Talk to yourself on a variety of topics. Record yourself and listen back to see if you sound interested. Practise stressing key words to sound more interested.
- it’s OK to ask the examiner to repeat the question.
- watch the tense in the question. Is it past, present or future? Make a note of it.
- if you can’t remember a word in English, try to describe it.

- write the correct amount of words, not too few and not too many.
- the best way to improve your vocabulary is to do lots of reading
- Timing is important. You’ve got 20 minutes for the first part and 40 minutes for the second part.
The two writing questions are marked out of 9 according to the following criteria:

- Coherence and Cohesion
- Lexical Resource
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy
